Running away from home

I used to be a person who would see vacation or travel as a way to get away from working out. But now when we go out of town, one of my favorite things to do is to find new places to run (or return to old favorites).

I had 9.5 planned for Saturday but had to cut it short. Scott was taking off to see the Gophers play at TCF Bank Field and I was overcome by some awful stomach unpleasantness mid-way through my run. I settled for six miles at roughly a 10:00/mile pace. Despite it not being the run I wanted, I guess that’s not too bad. I’ve been fighting a cold since Thursday and had to run with a tissue jammed up my right nostril to stop it from running all over the place. Yeah, pretty classy.

The route was nothing to brag about – a lot of freeway industrial park running, but the weather made up for it; it was a great day for running.

Do I look sick? I am. Boo.

Sunday: the reason for our trip (a niece’s confirmation) wasn’t going down until 1:00pm, so I had plenty of time to get out for some miles. I settled for four; my legs felt heavy and I was just trying to enjoy the lovely weather. Fall in Minnesota: totally winning this weekend. This was an out and back on a nice urban trail circling one of the nearby lakes.

Simply lovely Sunday

So despite not feeling all that special over the weekend, I’m glad I didn’t just sit around and wallow (though I did do a lot of sleeping on Saturday).

Yesterday, after getting about four hours of sleep, I gave myself a day off on a perfect, mild fall day. It was tough. I’ll go out tonight for a few miles and probably freeze my ass off. Rest day fail.

I also have a pair of these sitting at home.

Runner, Eater, Mother, Tweeter

Amy, July 2013

I'm a thirty-something suburbanite turned ruralite living in the Upper Peninsula of Michigan. Wife, mom of two, eater of all things delicious, and a runner. This is where I blather on about running and health. Baby Number Three will be here in November (so yes, I'm a little crazy), and I'm running through my pregnancy for as long as my body's willing and able. There's also more of me at amyupnorth.com.
