PR Monday

I am always surprised at my PRs, because they happen on days I least expect it, and usually on days when I least want to run. Today was one of those days.
I don’t think I meant to start out terribly fast. It was chilly, it was getting late (and dark) and I really just wanted to get it done and done.
I think it was after I clocked the first mile at 9:36, feeling like it should have been slower, that I wondered if I could PR. At this point, I did make a concerted effort.
And the splits? Hello!
I’m trying not to kill myself post-marathon, and I know that I can’t push it this hard every workout. Tonight, if I am able to get out, I’ll definitely try to shoot for a slower pace over a longer distance (maybe a local hilly 4.25 miler?), but I’m also okay with running every other day for the next two weeks.
On my off days, I’d like to find a workout video or something I can do instead. We are still in the process of converting one of our spare bedrooms upstairs into a workout room of sorts. And while I hate buying DVDs, I’m thinking of trying out one of Bob Harper’s or if all else fails, digging out Jillian Michael’s 30 day shred. (I’ve tried that Insanity thing and I couldn’t walk for a week from all of the bouncing on my calves. No thanks.)
Our commitment this winter is to get strength training into our normal routine, in addition to the regular snowshoeing, nordic skiing (for Scott), skate skiing (for me, if I can grab a pair of boots somewhere), and occasional pickup hockey rental. And running, of course.
What are your winter go-to activities? Still running? Or do you switch sports with the seasons?
